Planning a Remodeling Project in Washington?
Planning a kitchen, a bathroom, a basement, new windows, siding or a deck in the District? If the property sits in a historic district, the review comes before the building permit, not alongside it. We check that before we price the work.
What Remodeling Work in Washington Actually Involves
Historic Review Comes Before The Permit
For a property in one of the District's historic districts, any visible exterior change needs Historic Preservation Review Board approval before the Department of Buildings will issue a permit. Window replacement, door changes, roof work, decks, fences and even painting previously unpainted masonry are all on that list. The review time has to be in the schedule from the start.
It Is DOB, Not DCRA
The Department of Buildings took over permitting, plan review and inspections from DCRA when the agency was restructured in 2022. Anyone still talking about pulling a DCRA permit has not filed one in the District for a while. Small detail, but it is a fair way to tell who works here.
