Do I need primer?
Over bare patching, over gloss, over a dark colour and over anything that was previously oil-painted, yes. Everywhere else it is usually not worth the extra coat, and we will say so.
How many coats?
Two on a colour change. One will look fine wet and patchy dry, which is the single most common complaint about a cheap paint job.
Can you match a colour that is already on the wall?
In most cases yes, from a sample. It is never exact on an aged wall, which is why a full wall is usually painted rather than a patch.
