Government Program

Will Maryland help pay to bring my house up to code?

By All Purpose Anytime Services LLC

Maryland's Department of Housing and Community Development runs the Maryland Housing Rehabilitation Program, which finances work to bring a property up to the building codes and standards that apply to it. There is also a Special Targeted Applicant Rehabilitation Program for households that meet income targets.

What the program finances

The program provides financing to bring a property up to applicable building codes and standards. For income targeted households, the Special Targeted Applicant Rehabilitation Program is the version to ask about.

Maryland DHCD sets the loan terms, so ask the department for current amounts and rates. It also decides who qualifies. This was the information on record as of October 2026.

How to start

Contact Maryland DHCD. Its office is at 7800 Harkins Road, Lanham, MD. Ask which version of the program fits your household and how the department wants the contractor's bid submitted. It also helps to walk in knowing roughly what the house needs. A list of code problems with a price beside each one is easier to discuss than a general sense that the house needs work.

Our part

We are not enrolled with Maryland DHCD as a program contractor, and the application is yours to file. We hold a Maryland contractor license and work from Bryans Road in Charles County.

We cover Maryland homes within about 30 miles of Washington, from Bethesda and Silver Spring to Bowie, Waldorf and La Plata. Code work in an older Maryland house is rarely one item. Rotten sills, a failing window and an unsafe stair often turn up together. We walk the house, list each repair in a written estimate with its own price, and if the program lets you choose your contractor, we can do the work.

Services this program can pay for

Code repairs usually land in whole-home remodeling when the list is long, room renovations when it is a few rooms, exterior carpentry for rotted trim, sills and porch parts, and window replacement.
